Carbon Offset facts

A carbon offset is a financial instrument representing a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
  • One carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.
  • There are two primary markets for carbon offsets. In the larger compliance market, companies, governments or other entities buy carbon offsets in order to comply with caps on the total amount of carbon dioxide they are allowed to emit.
In the much smaller voluntary market, individuals, companies, or governments purchase carbon offsets to mitigate their own greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, electricity use, and other sources.
  • Offsets are typically generated from emissions-reducing projects. The most common project type is renewable energy, such as wind farms, biomass energy, or hydroelectric dams.
  • Other common project types include energy efficiency projects, the destruction of industrial pollutants or agricultural byproducts, destruction of landfill methane, and forestry projects
  • Purchase and withdrawal of emissions trading credits also occurs, which creates a connection between the voluntary and regulated carbon markets.
Carbon offsetting as part of a "carbon neutral" lifestyle has gained some appeal and momentum mainly among consumers in western countries who have become aware and concerned about the potentially negative environmental effects of energy-intensive lifestyles and economies.
  • The commercial system has contributed to the increasing popularity of voluntary offsets among private individuals, companies, and organizations as well as investment in clean technologies, clean energy and reforestation projects around the world. Offsets may be cheaper or more convenient alternatives to reducing one's own fossil-fuel consumption. However, some critics object to carbon offsets, and question the benefits of certain types of offsets.

Gallery Problems

Here is my gallery where i have created thumbnail links of the images that will open in another web window. Problems that I have had with my gallery is that  the images were presented in one long vertical line, but this is because it was presented as seperate divs. overall looking at this page this is the one that i am most pleased with because of the linking between the thumbnail and external page link.

Site Progression

Here is most of my site developed they are all the pages except my gallery page and my links page. This is because i have a plan with my gallery to have a thumbnail then the image opens on another page. so far i have come over some issues such as divs not connecting.

Index Created

After creating my mockups and grasping the coding of html I have created my index page. The way in which this is diffrent to my mockup is i have dropped the navigation logo idea for a basic navigation panned of just text. i now plan to create the rest of my site around my index page.

Mock ups

After researching the layout of other carbon offset sites i have produced my mock ups based around the layout of others. I feel that by using a neutral coloured background i am portraying the way in which we are making the world a better environment.

HTML Research

html stands for hyper text markup language and is used in a way of describing a text infomation document and converting it into a way of displaying the codes as a website by defineing links, headings, paragraphs, images and lists.

The way in which html was developed took over nine years and two physicists. I say this because Tim Burners Lee who was a contractor for a major computer company proposed a prototype of a system where users could upload and share files. Then nine years later Robert Cailliau and Burners Lee both submitted a proposal for an internet hypertext system which had a similar function. Therefor the following year they joined forces and created the world wide web project which was then acepted by CERN.

Site Material

now i know my subject i have researched the material that i plan to put into each page of the carbon offset website

Index

A carbon offset is a financial instrument representing a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Although there are six primary categories of greenhouse gases, carbon offsets are measured in metric tons of carbon dioxide-equivalent (CO2e). One carbon offset represents the reduction of one metric ton of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent in other greenhouse gases.
There are two primary markets for carbon offsets. In the larger compliance market, companies, governments or other entities buy carbon offsets in order to comply with caps on the total amount of carbon dioxide they are allowed to emit. In 2006, about $5.5 billion of carbon offsets were purchased in the compliance market, representing about 1.6 billion metric tons of CO2e reductions.

Current issues

The carbon offset market worth about £60m worldwide, up from £20m in 2005. Within three years it is expected to top £300m, as a growing number of organisations and companies race to declare themselves "carbon neutral".
Concern is growing that the demand for offsets is allowing projects to claim savings they do not deserve, which are then sold on as "carbon credits". A tree planting or windfarm project reckoned to save up 30,000 tonnes of carbon could sell an equivalent number of carbon credits for about £3 each. To provide a true carbon saving, the developers of such projects must demonstrate that it would not have happened without the investment raised by selling such credits, called additionality. The saving is then worked out against what would have happened, the baseline.

Main Problems

Unethical carbon offset companies sell you trees or a stake in a renewable energy project. The problem is that the renewable energy projects already exist and that the trees in most cases would have been planted anyway by the carbon offset companies' planting partners. Neither the trees nor the renewable energy projects appear to remove any additional carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere. Those buying offsets are simply subsidising existing project. If the carbon offset companies created their own projects or planted their own trees, then their marketing claims would carry more weight. All trees will eventually die, root and release the carbon dioxide stored in each tree back into the atmosphere. While planting trees is a good thing, it is therefore not a permanent solution. And over the long term this will invalidate the carbon neutral claim.

International Perspective

a mid-sized 30 mpg car driving 12,000 miles/year will create about 3.55 tons of CO2/year. Using the carbon calculator of one of the companies which are listed here, we figured this would cost only about $19.50 or $1.63/month to be offset! It is up to each of us to clean our own mess, obviously the government can't and won't do it (alone). Signing up with any of these programs might effectively reduce your CO2 contributions to ZERO! (All prices in US$ or British Pound where indicated)
Russia has declared that it will not sell surplus carbon emission permits to other countries and will stockpile about $58 billion worth of the Kyoto carbon credits. It plans to use these surplus emission permits under the next climate treaty.

Future Solutions

Government can influence behaviour at both the individual and corporate level by sending clear signals about what we need to do. That’s why we’re campaigning through The Big Ask climate campaign for the UK Government to introduce a strong climate change law which commits the UK to making annual reductions in the UK’s carbon emissions across all sections of society (homes, transport, business, industry etc), creating the framework necessary to allow the solutions to climate change to flourish, i.e. clean energy, well designed cars, a 21st century public transport system, help for people to make their homes thermally efficient, technological and financial assistance to developing countries. A strong law would allow the UK to do its fair share3 of cutting global emissions and would set an example the rest of the world could follow.
For companies to invest in new carbon-saving products they need to be confident that the Government is determined to move towards a low-carbon economy. The greater certainty that would arise from setting annual targets for CO2 cuts would help achieve this. This would encourage businesses and individuals to reduce emissions at source as much as is practically possible by looking at energy conservation and efficiency measures (e.g. using more efficient vehicles, solar heating for water, etc). The problem with carbon offsetting is that it makes it harder to persuade people to actually reduce their emissions at source. We need to fly less, buy less, regulate polluters and support communities affected by pollution and climate change.

Disputes

All trees will eventually die, root and release the carbon dioxide stored in each tree back into the atmosphere. While planting trees is a good thing, it is therefore not a permanent solution. And over the long term this will invalidate the carbon neutral claim.

It is a scientific fact that If you plant 100 trees, an average of 5%-10% of the trees will die within the first 10 years. This is due to diseases, pest and animal attacks, handling errors, climate and so on. It is therefore very likely that the volume of trees sold will be unable to absorb the expected volume of CO2 and hence, make an activity carbon neutral.

This again means that the trees sold are unlikely to absorb the predicted volume of carbon throughout the life cycle of the tree, as claimed by the carbon offset companies.

Web Design

Looking at the new brief this project seems interesting because by creating a website this way you learn the structure of how a website is created and functions.

Evaluation

Looking back on this project I fell that I have controlled this project very well. The reason that I say this is because I look back at my blog and see that I have spread each part of the project over an appropriate space of time to complete it. I feel that my visually researching two or three artists from each category in the beginning helped me establish an artist to base m project around. I also feel that by creating my box first I got that not so easy craft work out the way and the way that I knew it would work was by creating dummy models of the postcards, essay, poster and leaflet. Then by creating the documents that I needed to get printed at blow up which was my leaflet and poster so that in the first week of the holidays I could go and get them printed.

The part of the project that I feel went the best was my box and wrapping paper. The reason that I say this is because with my box I have learned how to assemble a box with measurements. I am very happy with my wrapping paper because this was something that was developed and not just my first try. And m idea of using two different sized tap and bulb is another idea I am pleased with. The part of the project that I am not so please with is my postcards because they were the best quality images that I could find and then had to be stretched which have made them slightly pixelated.

Looking back on the software used I feel that I have developed my skills further. I say this because I have developed my tracing skills in Illustrator, the layout in Photoshop, and my InDesign skill with text wrap and layout of my essay. Other skill that I have developed is my craft skill with making the box and cutting the paper for my wrapping paper. And my printing skills have been developed with making the paper through an ink jet printer. I also feel that my skills in identifying sympathetic fonts have improved as well. Over all I am very happy with the end result of this project.
